CONSORT-Equity

Vivian Welch (NPI), Peter Tugwell and colleagues received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in 2015 to develop a reporting guideline for health equity in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Abstract

Randomized trials are an important source of evidence about the effects of programs and policy on health. They are used in public health, clinical medicine, health systems research, social science and education and international development. We have found that randomized trials often fail to report details about variation in effects across population characteristics such as sex, age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. This failure limits their usefulness for policy and program decision-makers. This research seeks to systematically establish the current state of reporting and analysis of effects across factors associated with disadvantage and vulnerability. We will then develop evidence-based reporting guidelines using an international panel and consensus process as an extension of the internationally recognized CONsolidated Standards for Reporting Trials (CONSORT) reporting guidelines, with input from leaders in medicine, social science, international development and public health.

Objectives

  1. To assess reporting characteristics of RCTs with a focus on description and analysis of health equity,
  2. To assess available guidelines for RCTs that consider health equity,
  3. To consult with global experts from different disciplines and stakeholder organizations on methods to improve reporting of health equity in RCTs,
  4. To prioritize candidate list of items to improve reporting of health equity in RCTs,
  5. To seek formal consensus on items to improve reporting of health equity concerns in RCTs.
